On July 8, 2024, the handover and naming ceremony of the "Xin Hongzhuan," an intelligent research and training ship, was grandly held at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. in Dalian. This milestone event was graced by the presence of esteemed dignitaries and industry leaders.
The "Xin Hongzhuan" was developed by the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute under China State Shipbuilding Corporation and built by Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. The vessel boasts impressive specifications: a length of 69.83 meters, a beam of 10.9 meters, and a depth of 5 meters. With a service speed of 17.5 knots, it is manned by 15 crew members, 5 researchers, and 30 students. The ship proudly flies the Chinese national flag and is classified by the China Classification Society.
Equipped with a fully electric dual-pod propulsion system, the "Xin Hongzhuan" is set to achieve the i-Ship (l, Nx, Mx, Ex, Rx, Ax) intelligent ship classification, meeting the highest standards of intelligent technology as per the China Classification Society's norms. This ship marks a global first, integrating remote control, autonomous navigation, and comprehensive training functionalities. It is designed to cater to the needs of both researchers and students, representing a significant leap in maritime technology and education.
The "Xin Hongzhuan" project, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, entails a total investment of approximately 180 million yuan. The project commenced in 2018, with the feasibility study approved in 2020, preliminary design approved in early 2021, bidding and construction contracts finalized in 2022, construction beginning in 2023, and the vessel launching in December 2023. The ship was finally delivered for use in July 2024.
This vessel is a pivotal part of Dalian Maritime University's "14th Five-Year Plan" for scientific and technological innovation. It stands as a significant support platform for China's strategies of strengthening maritime and transportation sectors. Furthermore, it is a core task of the university's "Double First-Class" initiative and a landmark achievement of the "National Key Laboratory for Waterway Transportation Control."
With the official delivery of "Xin Hongzhuan," Dalian Maritime University now boasts three active training ships: "Yukun," "Yupeng," and the newly delivered "Xin Hongzhuan." This fleet will significantly enhance the university's capability to provide hands-on training and cutting-edge research opportunities for its students and faculty.
